Hunterlink’s CEO Gavin Kelso travelled to Manilla in the Philippines on the 25th June 2016 for “Day of the Seafarer”, this year’s conference theme was “At Sea for All”.
The conference was held at SMX Convention centre in Manilla with over 300,000 seafarers attending. Hunterlink held an information stall at the conference and was nominated for “personality welfare of the year’ award 2016, but was unsuccessful as AMOSUP took out the award. Gav said that it was well deserved for Associated Marine Officers & Seamen Union Philippines (AMOSUP) to be awarded and acknowledged for the work they do for their seafarers.
The conference was also recognising the services of the world’s 1.5 million seafarers and the unique conditions they work under; an opportunity to reflect on the role seafarers play in our global economy; and commit to improving seafarer safety and welfare. With 80 per cent of the world’s goods shipped by sea, shipping is the most efficient, dependable and cost-efficient way to transport goods globally, facilitating commerce and increasing economic opportunities amongst nations.
During the week in Manilla, Gav was also strengthening Hunterlinks relationship with AMOSUP around providing quality mental health and welfare for seafarers. Gav was able to visit and experience all the services that AMOSUP provide to their 100,000 paying members, as the Philippines make up a 3rd of the worlds seafarers. These services include 3 hospitals, a dorm style accommodation (able to house 400 people) for their members, training/ education facility, as well as a department store and supermarket style shopping centre for AMOSUP members.
Gav had a tour of one of the hospital sites, which is attached to the AMOSUP office. Gav said the whole experience was breathtaking to see what the Oca family dynasty has been able to setup and accomplish for the Seafarers since the Union started in the 60’s by CAPT GREGORIO OCA.
